In the event of a body collision, rapid response to detect potential TBI and provide corrective action is imperative to good health and recovery. Trauma Aware™ mobile apps enable on-site computer-based assessment programs that assist in identifying concussions or TBIs. Our mobile applications can be self-administered or used under guidance of a companion to determine if typical concussion symptoms are present. Each user must first undergo baseline testing to establish individuals’ normal cognitive skills. The primary purpose of cognitive testing is to investigate how well a person performs in response to executing coordinated tasks or correctly answering questions.
Some objectives of Trauma Aware™ testing is to assess tachistoscope functions (rapid observation memory testing), visual comprehension, physical competence, perceptual accuracy, and stereopsis (differences in object size and motion parallax). Combined, these elements help to objectively evaluate several cognitive processes that can be indicators to TBI.
In evaluating the potential of TBI, cognitive testing compares current test performance against the individual’s baseline performance. The evaluation process can be conceptualized by four stages: comprehension, retrieval, judgment and response. Cognitive testing further considers the degree of difficulty respondents experience as they receive challenges or increasing difficulty.
Trauma Aware™ has worked with world-leading cognitive experts to develop a quantitative scale for understanding cognitive morbidity. Currently, concussion testing is typically based on the Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) which is 40 years old. GCS is a clinical tool designed to assess coma and impaired consciousness and incorporates subjective reviews but lacks a standardized testing procedure that eliminates individual biases of the issuing administrator. The Trauma Aware™ Coefficient (TAC) is based on cognitive principles that have been found to be repeatable under a wide variety of conditions and administrators, including self-administered testing.
Trauma Aware™ provides a series of baseline tests used to assess an individual’s normal learning and memory skills, ability to pay attention or concentrate, and how quickly they think and solve problems. Baseline testing also helps to identify the presence of concussion symptoms. Results from baseline tests are compared to the results of similar tests conducted after an individual has a suspected concussion. Comparing post-injury test results to baseline test results provides valuable insight in identifying the effects of the injury and making more informed decisions about corrective action.
